Inside the gates, the city sounds are muted and the crunch of dry leaves and the melody of birdsong will fill your ears as you stroll the grounds and imagine how things were in the times when these people were alive.
But even in such a peaceful place, there are stories of hauntings. One passerby claims to have seen a little girl all alone, wearing a pretty dress and riding a scooter, her hair done up in ribbons and curls. The cemetery is not in a good area. Who would let a little girl play outside by herself ? Did this passerby catch a glimpse of a playful spirit?
There is another haunting tale tied to Glenwood, the death of Leslie Casteel. In April 1931, Casteel and his girlfriend, Helen Joy Morgan, were having a disagreement and drove to a secluded area in the cemetery to talk. Soon after they parked, shots rang out. Casteel was dead.
Helen Morgan was from a wealthy family, and Leslie Casteel was an illiterate auto mechanic, ten years her senior, who had been married three times and was known to be a serial philanderer. A few months before his death, Casteel had been arrested on suspicion of arson. He was suspected of burning his house down to collect the insurance money. He was painted as the villain, at first.
Helenâs story was that he forced her into his car and made her drive to the cemetery. He was angry because she had spoken to the police about him burning down his home the day before and because he thought she was engaged to someone else. When they parked, she was able to get his gun away from him and shoot him dead in self-defense.
Five shots were fired from a .32 caliber revolver. Three passed through his body. A witness claims Morgan then dragged Casteelâs body from the car, turned him over to make sure he was dead, then hopped back in the car and drove away.
The police were skeptical of Morganâs version of events. It was eventually uncovered that she was a jealous and possessive girlfriend and that she brought the gun to the meeting. Morgan was convicted of second-degree murder on January 14, 1932. She was sentenced to twenty to twenty-five years in prison.
Could Casteelâs ghost be a restless spirit doomed to wander the cemetery forever?
